Mamdani (Democratic Party, Working Families Party) ran for election for Mayor of New York. He won in the general election on November 4, 2025. He advanced from the Democratic primary on June 24, 2025.
Mamdani announced that he was running for New York City mayor in October 2024.1 In the Democratic primary, he defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo and nine other candidates, receiving 56.4% of the vote after three rounds of ranked-choice voting. In the 2025 general election, he received 50.9% of the vote, defeating Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Curtis Sliwa (R). Mamdani is the first Muslim and the first South Asian person to serve as mayor of New York City. 2
